As early as the Middle Ages, the nobles and the rulers of the country provided and supported horse breeders with their own stallions, recognising the economic importance of good horse breeding at the time.  Decrees were issued to regulate and strengthen this common practice. 

The State of Baden-Württemberg as well as other States within Germany still hold the necessary number of stallions for modern breeding and provide access to them for breeders all over the country.  By the end of February, many of the stallions are moved to yards across the state.  These yards are usually owned by counties or communities to provide easy and local access for breeders to the stallions.  By the end of June, all stallions return to the State Stud.
